Whether you have a claims or a billing question, talking to an insurance company can be a difficult experience. However, if you keep some basic guidelines in mind, you will likely improve the experience and increase the chances of getting what you want. While the guidelines may be basic to you, they're worth reviewing for the reminder that we all need once in a while.
- Prepare for the call: get your information together and get comfortable.
- Place the call prepared to find your way through a phone tree.
- When you get to the right person, make a friend. In the future, you can return to your friend with additional requests.
- If you don't get the response you want, ask for a supervisor.
- At the end of the call repeat what was agreed to -- including who is to do what.
- Make notes after the call so you'll have all the information you need to follow up.
