It's not easy to check a doctor's disciplinary record because the great majority of states do not publish this information. Since the information is specific to each state, it becomes even more difficult to learn about any disciplinary actions against a doctor who has moved from another state.
Start with your state's Medical Board (sometimes known as Medical Examiners). To locate the licensing agency in your state, see: http://www.checkbooks.org/doctors/discipline.cfm
Additional alternatives include:
. It's free. - For a disciplinary report on a particular doctor send $9.95 to the Federation of State Medical Boards, Attn: Physician Profiles, P.O. Box 97205, Dallas, TX 75397-2507 or order it from www.docinfo.org
. - Public Citizen sells regional publications listing doctors disciplined by state and federal governments 877.747.1616 or go to www.citizen.org/hrg
, click on "Questionable Doctors" and then "Purchase the book." The cost is $20.
