Complaints About Home Care


Most reputable home health agencies provide quality care. However, there may be times when a service is not delivered as it should be. Some individuals may be hesitant to complain, or are not sure when it is appropriate. The following information will provide some general guidelines. Remember, it is your right as a home health patient to have your needs met safely and effectively.

Subjects That It Is Reasonable To Complain About Include:

  • An employee that is repeatedly late.
  • An employee that does not show-up for a scheduled visit.
  • Behavior that seems suspect or untrustworthy.
  • An employee that has poor wok habits. For example, a person who spends too much time talking on the telephone, watching television, or doing just enough to get by.
  • Rough physical handling.
  • Indifferent care.
  • Inadequate attention to patient hygiene.
  • Toilets, bedpans, or bathtubs that are not properly cleaned. While an occasional oversight might be expected, repeated offenses should not be tolerated.

How To Complain

If you are having problems with a provided service, consider first speaking to the party at fault. If this is not effective speak to the supervisor in charge of your care. The name and number should be included in your plan of care.

If you don’t get satisfaction and believe that your home health agency is not providing quality care you should call your state’s department of Human Services.
