There are six steps to requesting an accommodation under the Americans With Disabilities Act and similar laws.

Step 1. Think about what accomodations are reasonable and what to ask for

Step 2. Pull together information to support your request.

Step 3. Decide what you do and don't want to tell your employer.

Step 4. Be prepared to negotiate.

Step 5. Put your request in writing.

Step 6. Decide how to handle the negotiation.

Each of the steps is discussed in detail in other sections of this document.

After an accommodation is agreed to, follow-up by putting your agreement in writing signed by both parties - or at least by your employer.

NOTE: If your employer does not agree to the accommodation you need, you can ask for a mediator to help decide the issue. You can also file a complaint with the state fair employment agency or the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). You can also contact a lawyer and start a lawsuit.
