It's not easy living after a life-changing diagnosis. There may be times when adjustment is more difficult than others, such as just after a diagnosis, after completing a treatment, or after receiving bad news. However, difficulty in adjusting can happen to anyone, at any time.

Mental health professionals are there to help.

The steps to choosing a professional are:

  • Step 1: Determine what type of therapist to see: a psychiatrist, psychologist or social worker.
  • Step 2: Find potential therapists
  • Step 3: Contact the therapist before setting an appointment to find out if the person works for you in general.
  • Step 4: Be prepared for the first session.
  • Step 5: Think about the money -- whether the therapist is covered by your health insurance or you have to pay in full on your own. If money is a problem, there may be free or low cost help available.
