"Patient Advocate" is the term used for a person who helps you deal with the medical system. The most common use of patient advocates is to accompany you to meetings with medical professionals. The role starts with diagnosis, and continues until treatment starts. Once treatment starts, it is useful for patient advocates to accompany you to meetings with medical personnel during which your condition or treatment will, or could, be discussed.
A Patient Advocate is generally a family member or friend.
Do not choose a person to be patient advocate just because he or she offers. It is important to pick a person who is right for the role in order to get the most benefit.
The other sections of this document show you what to look for in a patient advocate, what to discuss with the person, and the procedure to follow which permits your medical team to speak with your Patient Advocate.
There are professional Patient Advocates if you do not have a family member or friend to fill the role.To learn about such advocates, see "To Learn More".
