The best place to start to learn about the insurance situation in your state is with the reputable, objective, web sites that provide a free overview. Below are the names of five such sites starting with a site provided by the federal government. The rest of the sites are in alphabetical order. A brief summary of the contents of each site is contained in other sections of this document.

  • www.HealthCare.gov offsite link - includes all of the health insurance plans available in your area including from private insurers and state high-risk pools. In addition to details about benefits, the site includes what percentage of applicants were denied or had to pay a surcharge because of health status.
  • www.ahirc.org offsite link (includes insurance through associations and some unions)
  • www.coverageforall.org offsite link (includes a live operator)

NOTE:

  • If you have been uninsured for at least six months, Health Reform 2010 establishes a temporary national high-risk pool to provide health coverage to Individuals with pre-existing medical conditions starting the end of September 2010 until January 1, 2014. U.S. citizens and legal immigrants who have a pre-existing medical condition and who have been uninsured for at least six months are eligible to enroll in the high-risk pool and receive subsidized premiums. To learn about the pool in your state, see:  www.healthcare.gov/law/provisions/preexisting/index.html offsite link
  • If you need more information, and/or to confirm that information which is important to you is up-to-date, speak with your local disease specific non-profit organization, an experienced insurance broker, your state insurance department, or study the laws yourself. You can locate your state insurance department at www.naic.org/state web map.htm offsite link
