Compounding is an old tradition of specially preparing medicines to meet the patient's individual needs. In other words, with compounding, medications can basically be personalized for you.
Compounding can modify a medication:
- To any desired dosage amount or
- Into a different form. For example, turning a hard to swallow pill into a patch or an injectible drug.
All compounds are based on a doctor's prescription, and are automatically approved by the FDA because they do not create an unapproved drug.
Your insurance company may even pay for all or part of a compounded medication.
