ADAP (AIDS Drug Assistance Programs) is a drug safety net for people living with HIV/AIDS. While there are eligibility requirements that vary from state-to- state, you don't have to be poor to qualify for ADAP.
Certain aspects of ADAP are the same no matter what state you live in: clients must be HIV positive, have a low income and be under or uninsured. Aspects of ADAP that vary state to state are:
- Eligibility (for example, maximum amount of income)
- Formulary coverage (the list of covered drugs although each ADAP must have at least one drug in each class of antiretroviral medication)
- Other benefits (for example, ADAPs can pay health insurance premiums, deductibles or co-insurance amounts).
ADAP can even be used for people who have Medicare. ADAP generally does not apply to people with both Medicare and Medicaid.
A few ADAP programs have waiting lists.
Information about ADAP in your state is available through the ADAP Advocacy Association
, from your on the internet, through your local HIV organization, or through a social worker, hospital or your doctor.
