ADAP (AIDS Drug Assistance Programs) is a drug safety net for people living with HIV/AIDS. While there are eligibility requirements that vary from state-to- state, you don't have to be poor to qualify for ADAP.

Certain aspects of ADAP are the same no matter what state you live in: clients must be HIV positive, have a low income and be under or uninsured. Aspects of ADAP that vary state to state are:

  • Eligibility (for example, maximum amount of income)
  • Formulary coverage (the list of covered drugs although each ADAP must have at least one drug in each class of antiretroviral medication)
  • Other benefits (for example, ADAPs can pay health insurance premiums, deductibles or co-insurance amounts).

ADAP can even be used for people who have Medicare. ADAP generally does not apply to people with both Medicare and Medicaid.

A few ADAP programs have waiting lists.

Information about ADAP in your state is available through the ADAP Advocacy Association offsite link, from your on the internet, through your local HIV organization, or through a social worker, hospital or your doctor.
