1/1

Colorectal cancer is cancer  offsite linkthat generally occurs in the colon or rectum. (For a general colorectal cancer overview, click here).

The Treatment

The standard treatment for Stage 0 and 1 colorectal cancer is surgery. Surgery is performed without cutting into the skin by inserting a medical device through the rectum. The procedure used is either a colonoscopy of a sigmoidoscopy - the same procedures which are used to diagnose colorectal cancer.

This type of surgery is generally performed on an out patient basis so you are sent home the same day as the procedure.

  • For information about a sigmoidoscopy, click here

Both procedures require preparation to clean out the colon. For information about what is involved in the preparation, click here. NOTE: If you schedule the procedure for the first day of your work week, you will not lose an additional day for the preparation.

If another type of surgery is recommended, click here for suggested questions to ask.

The Doctor

The doctor who will perform the surgery is generally a gastroenterologist or an internist.  Preferably, the doctor is board-certified, and has extensive experience with the procedure.
