If You Are Insured
- Your health insurance will continue to cover medical treatments so long as they are medically necessary.
- Most health insurance covers palliative care -- the relief of pain and other symptoms - even if disease for the treatment is stopped. Insurance also generally covers hospice care, whether in a hospital, facility or at home. (See the section, Hospice Care, for more information).
- For information about maximizing your health insurance, no matter what type it is, see:
- You will still have to deal with deductibles, co-pays and other costs that may not be covered. (If paying for these costs is difficult, see below about financial concerns).
If You Do Not Have Health Insurance (uninsured)
- There are techniques for obtaining the care you need. See Uninsured.
- If you have limited income and resources in addition to a house and car, you may qualify for Medicaid (Medi-cal in California).
- If you have more resources than allowed, your state may still let you qualify for medical care other than nursing home care. To learn how, click here.
- To learn about the law in your state and how to apply for Medicaid (Medi-cal), look for a health insurance assistance program, by clicking here
. or by going to www.familiesusa.org
and type "health insurance assistance program" in the search area.
