T'ai Chi
1/1
T'ai chi is an ancient Chinese system of gentle nonimpact movements, meditation and breathing. While T'ai chi was developed for self defense, it has evolved into a mind- body exercise.
Research indicates that T'ai chi is effective for stress and anxiety reduction. It also lowers blood pressure and reduces heart rate. T'ai chi improves balance, flexibility, strength and sleeplessness.
You can learn T'ai chi on your own. However, it is better to start with an experienced knowledgable instructor to learn the proper techniques, including breathing. Though it is not common, an instructor will also help keep you from injuring yourself doing T'ai Chi.
You can find a T'ai Chi instructor through a cancer treatment center or the website of T'ai Chi Chih, www.taichichih.org Click on "Teachers".
CAUTION: Check with your doctor before trying T'ai Chi if you have balance or lower back problems or other physical limitation.
