How To Maximize Your Benefits If You Need Time Off For Health Reasons

In addition to Sick Leave and Vacation Time, you may be entitled to an extension of a part or all of your income for a period of time if:

• Your employer carries short term disability insurance (either because of a state law or voluntarily) or
• Your employer continues salaries for people on disability from its own funds

Generally, short term disability insurance or similar voluntary programs last for up to six months.

To maximize your benefit, if your employer allows it:

• First take sick leave.
• Then receive the continuing income.
• Then take your vacation time. Your vacation time is vested: you could take your vacation time or be paid for it if you return to work. If your disability becomes a long term disability and you leave work entirely, you will receive a check for your vacation time.

Some employers require employees to take vacation time before receiving a disability income. In that case, take sick leave first, then vacation time, then the disability income.
