Don't Under Report Your Income And Resources
1/1
There may be a temptation to under-report your resources and income in order to qualify for SSI. Please resist that tendency. To avoid future grief, answer all questions honestly and completely.
The Social Security Administration has the ability and right to seek verification of your reported answers in virtually any place that includes your Social Security number including all records maintained by the IRS, Social Security and all other federal government agencies, all bank account records and stock brokerage accounts.
There are areas where Social Security simply accepts your statements without question as long as Social Security does not have any conflicting information. For example, unless you volunteer that your professional quality audio/video system is worth $ 5,000, it will probably not be counted.
There is a big difference between not volunteering information and intentionally giving wrong answers to questions. If, as the result of your misleading answers, Social Security finds that you should not have been receiving SSI benefits, Social Security will demand that the money be paid back. Social Security has been known to be forgiving when it makes an error and overpays you. However, when the error is caused by your lack of truthfulness, Social Security is generally not so nice. Remember, Social Security is an arm of the federal government, which means Social Security has very, very long arms.
