Generally, pet insurance policies have the following features:

  • The policies cover illness, injury and accident.
  • The policies have a deductible and a co-pay for each pet.
  • There is a limitation on the amount of coverage per injury or illness (generally between $1,000 and $2,500) and a limitation on the amount per year.
  • There may also be a limit over the lifetime of the pet.

Pet policies generally do not cover:

  • Pre-existing illnesses and conditions.
  • Hereditary and congenital conditions.
  • Routine checkups.
  • Grooming.
  • Vaccinations.
  • Preventable diseases of non-vaccinated animals and conditions resulting from non-vaccination.

Pet policies do not cover animals over a given age, such as 10 years old. If the policies do cover an older pet, the premiums greatly increase.
