There are medical and wellness steps described in other sections of this document that must be taken while undergoing chemotherapy. In addition to helping the drugs do their job, they can help you get through this difficult period. For instance:
- During chemotherapy, maintaining adequate nutrition helps minimize deficiency and optimize your immune system, strength and treatment tolerance.
- If diarrhea shows up, take appropriate steps to get it under control as soon as you can. Severe dehydration can make you feel lousy. Even worse, it can lead to kidney failure.
- Keep anti-nausea medications with you whenever possible in case nausea shows up. If you control nausea early, it prevents vomiting which can lead to further complications.
- Learn when to call your doctor when undergoing chemotherapy. For instance, excessive fatigue could indicate low platelets or low red blood cells. Platelets are the blood cells that help stop bleeding. Red blood cells fight infection.
