PPOs use financial incentives to get you to use the doctor or other health care provider with whom the insurer contracts ("network doctors" and "network providers") rather than those with whom they have no arrangement ("non-network doctors" or "non-network providers.") Care obtained outside of the "network" usually results in much higher costs to you.

PPOs include the following features:

  • Co-insurance
  • Deductible
  • Stop-loss clause

When you go to a doctor or other health care provider, you'll likely be asked to pay your share of the service. After you sign the appropriate paper work, the provider can bill the insurance company share of the bill directly to the company. Keep track of bills and payments. Medical expenses can be tax deductible.
