It is not easy to check a doctor's disciplinary record because the great majority of states do not publish this information. Since the information is specific to each state, it becomes even more difficult to learn about any disciplinary actions against a doctor who has moved from another state.

Start with your state's Medical Board (sometimes known as Medical Examiners). To locate the licensing agency in your state, see:Federation of State Medical Boards at www.fsmb.org/state-medical-boards/contacts offsite link

Additional alternatives include:

  • Both www.healthgrades.com offsite linkand www.docboard.org offsite link provide free disciplinary information.
  • For a disciplinary report about a particular doctor, see the Federation of State Medical Boards: www.docinfo.org offsite link.
  • Public Citizen sells regional publications listing doctors disciplined by state and federal governments 877.747.1616 or go to www.citizen.org/hrg offsite link, click on or search for the words: "Questionable Doctors."
