Ultrasound (ultra-sound) is a  procedure in which high-energy sound waves are bounced off internal tissues or organs and make echoes.

As a general matter:

  • A small device attached by a cord to a small machine is held over the area to be studied.
  • Echo patterns produce an image inside the body which show up on a video screen. The resulting picture of body tissues is called a sonogram.
  • Ultra sound machines are becoming so small that there are even hand held ultrasound machines.

The most well known application of ultrasound is its use to produce pictures of fetuses in the human womb. Ultrsound is also used with other conditions such as to help determine the presence of prostate cancer or a blood clot. For prostate cance, the device is inserted into the rectum (usually only with small discomfort rather than pain).
