Filing a claim with an insurer starts the process of getting health care paid for. Life will be easier, and you'll maximize your insurance, if you know how claims should get filed, what happens if you have more than one health insurance, and how to appeal to get what you deserve. NOTE: If you have a question whether a medical expense is covered by your insurance, file the claim. Let the insurer tell you it's not covered and why.

If you file the claim:

  • Be sure to follow the insurance company's procedures and requirements. For instance, pay attention to the dates by which claims must be filed. Also note requirements about  where and how claims are to be presented. A claim may be rejected if you don't follow the requirements.
  • Keep a photocopy of everything you submit to an insurer.
  • Keep track of what has been paid, and what hasn't. This can be done as simply as keeping two folders: one with submitted claims in it and the other to which claims are moved when they are paid. At the other extreme, you can manage claims at Quicken's http://www.QuickenMedical.com offsite link

If a claim is turned down by the insurance company - appeal! There are too many stories about health insurers saying "no" hoping that people won't know enough to push the issue. It's your health, and possibly your life.
