People with a serious health condition often experience a variety of emotions which are described below. Emotions can show up at any time, in no particular order, and in various depths of intensity. Sometimes more than one emotion shows up at a time. 

Out of control emotions can interfere with your medical care, including seeking medical help when advisable or adhering to drug regimens.

There are techniques to help soften the impact of emotions. If emotions interfere with your life, speak with your doctor or a mental health professional.

Typical emotions, each of which are discussed in other sections of this document, include the following:

  • Anxiety, including fear of the unknown.
  • Stress.
  • Depression.
  • Fear of a treatment.
  • Fear of a recurrence.
  • Fear of pain.
  • Concern about who will care for you if you are no longer independent. 
  • Fear of disabilitiy.
  • Guilt for depending on others
  • Anger at their body for failing them or themselves for "allowing" this to happen.
  • Financial concerns
  • Loss/grief
