It is common for the timing of death to be informally negotiated between patients and their doctor when end of life is near.

That is different from another person helping end life early.

  • Euthanasia is when one person takes action to end the life of a second person, at the request of the second person.
  • Assisted Suicide is the term generally used when a doctor or other medical professional provides the means for a patient to end his or her own life.

Euthanasia is illegal in all 50 states. It is legal in a few countries in Europe.

Assisted suicide is illegal in the vast majority of states. It is legal in a few countries in Europe.

Both euthanasia and assisted suicide are prohibited by the great world religions.

NOTE: Even if assisted suicide is legal in your state, we do not recommend ending life early -- even if death is imminent. We include information about it as part of our mission to provide complete information.
