HIPAA requires that a person who is "federally eligible" must be allowed to purchase an individual health insurance policy once their group health coverage ends.

The insurance to which you have a right to convert depends on the state in which you live.

If you plan to use the right to convert to obtain an individual policy, don't delay. The clock is running. You must apply for the health insurance for which you are federally eligible within 63 days of losing your prior coverage.

If the individual health insurance coverage you are able to obtain under either HIPAA or the group health insurance plan is not sufficient for your needs, see Obtaining Health Insurance.
