Your Rights And Responsibilities While You're On COBRA
Next »1/8
While you're on COBRA, you have certain rights and responsibilities. If you don't keep up with your responsibilities, you may lose your health insurance -- and face the difficulty of obtaining health insurance with a medical history.
Your may also lose your COBRA coverage sooner than the full continuation period if your employer cancels the group coverage, or if you become eligible for Medicare.
Employers are limited to the maximum premium they can charge you. You have to make payments when due, or at least during the grace period. If you lose your right to COBRA continuation of your health insurance, there is no right to have it reinstated (and it's against your employer's interest if you have a medical condition.)
While on COBRA:
Step 1. Pay your premium on time
Step 2. Be sure to give any change of address to the plan administrator
Step 3. Stay in touch with the plan administrator and your former co-workers
Step 4. Maintain a log or record of your payments
Step 5. Plan for termination of COBRA protection.
While it is advisable to meet all deadlines well before they are due, there may be steps to take if you inadvertently miss a deadline.
